The word \u2018mobility\u2019 tends to bring a vivid image into people\u2019s minds: the literal notion of movement through space. In this issue of <em>Open Citizenship<\/em>, we wanted to unpack the term and look at it from new angles. So in addition to exploring physical mobility \u2013 of students, workers and migrants, as well as impediments to the mobility of certain groups \u2013 we examine less conventional definitions of mobility, namely political mobility and the mobility of ideas.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kristine Mitchell &amp; Jillian Laux<\/strong> open \u2018It\u2019s Academic!\u2019 by presenting the results of a pilot investigation into the effect of ERASMUS study abroad on students\u2019 identification as a \u2018European\u2019. <strong>Catherine Wurth<\/strong> argues that the EU&#8217;s free movement policies for new Central and Eastern European Member States fails to meet the very needs of mobile workers that they are meant to assist and <strong>Eva Zschirnt <\/strong>examines the effects that mobile irregular immigrants have on their children in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Open Mic\u2019, we are happy to present our own intern, <strong>St\u00e9phanie Nowakowski<\/strong>, who shares her experiences of the ERASMUS and Leonardo da Vinci programmes.Meanwhile <strong>Rebecca Welge <\/strong>and<strong> Sebastian Kubitschko<\/strong> present a vision of political mobility where EU citizens are better able to influence political decision-making.\u00a0 Finally <strong>Lydia Medland <\/strong>presents an inside view of the Madrid protests from the very heart of &#8216;Plaza del Sol&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>We delve deeper into issues of educational, employment mobility, and get a youth perspective in \u2018Teatime\u2019 interviews. <strong>Pat Gibney <\/strong>from the European Employment Service talks about mobile workers in Ireland. <strong>Siru Korkala <\/strong>from the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) discusses the growth of international education and the importance of educational mobility programmes in supporting this trend and finally <strong>Micha\u0142 Braun<\/strong> talks about his experience on the Polish Youth Council during Poland\u2019s EU presidency.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Movement Watch\u2019, <strong>Young European Federalists (JEF)<\/strong>, <strong>Fraternit\u00e9 2020<\/strong>, <strong>The Unity Express<\/strong>, and <strong>European Disability Forum (EDF) <\/strong>present their projects and vision of a mobile Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Shane O\u2019Halloran <\/strong>teases out the mobility implications of <em>Guerrilla social media marketing, <\/em><strong>Mar\u00eda J. Mart\u00ednez <\/strong>reviews <em>Youth on the move<\/em>, and <strong>Carsten Rehbein <\/strong>takes a look at <em>Cosmopolitanism: Ideals, realities and Deficits <\/em>in our<em> &#8216;<\/em>Critic&#8217;s Corner&#8217;<em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our goal remains to give everyone a voice, and we think you will enjoy the juxtaposition of different types of content that addresses the same theme of &#8216;Mobility&#8217;. For example, we examine educational mobility programmes through four lenses: an academic survey, a personal story, an interview of a programme administrator and a book review. We hope you will agree that such multi-faceted treatment really enriches our understanding of this complex topic.
